Top Jobs (and Volunteer Positions) for Retirees

“Retired is being twice tired, I’ve thought… First tired of working, then tired of not!” – Richard Armour

Ah, retirement… in the time that led up to the momentous occasion, you probably envisioned lots of golf, trips, outings with friends, and basically doing whatever (the heck) you wanted to do! And you would relish in every flexible, stress-free, and laid-back moment.

In the beginning of retirement, that was probably the case! But as time went on, did you get bored? If you didn’t – good for you! If you did, you’re not alone. In fact, many retirees elect to take on some form of paid part-time work, or even regularly scheduled volunteer work, as a way to bring a little extra purpose to their retirement, and bring in additional income in some cases.

If you’re wondering what jobs are best suited for seniors just like you, keep reading!

Be a Consultant

Just because you’re retired doesn’t mean you’ve lost all the knowledge and experience you’ve spent your entire career building! Many retirees opt to do consulting work on the side as a way to stay busy and maintain the relationships they’ve built over the years. Consultants can set their own hours, and pick and choose the projects they want to work on.

Become a Pet Sitter/Walker

Do you love pets? Do you enjoy exercise? If you answered yes to both of these questions, becoming a pet sitter and/or walker may be a perfect fit for you! There are so many ways to get into the biz, but the easiest place to start is tapping into the networks of your friends and family.

Become a Driver

There are many services that require drivers, like Skip The DishesUber, and Lyft. One of the best parts about becoming a driver is that you can set your own hours. According to a survey, over half of Uber drivers are above the age of 60, so evidently it has become a popular option among seniors as it offers them flexibility, an income, and an enjoyable way to spend time. If you enjoy driving and being out and about, this might be the perfect option for you!

Volunteer with a Non-Profit Organization

Is there a cause or fundraiser that you’re passionate about? Volunteering for a worthwhile cause is a great way for seniors to meet new people and stay active. You can choose how many hours a week you want to be involved. There are many benefits for seniors who volunteer including reduced feelings of loneliness, gain a sense of purpose, develop new skills, and reduce their risk for dementia.

Join an Event Team

If you’re a fan of live events, then this job might be perfect for you! Depending on your task, you might just have a front-row spot for sporting events, concerts, or theatre productions. Better yet, you may even get additional perks like discounts on tickets or events. Alongside access to events, you get to work with a team of like-minded people. Nothing beats the feeling of watching an event come to life from start to finish!
